Painting thoughts

I've been taking my time painting my minis so far i have a handful of 'almost' completed figures some of them just need tiny touch ups and to be based. I also like to set my minis down for a few days or more just to get a new perspective on them. Usually after a rest i can move past any issues i was having before.

So with this Acolyte for my HQ retinue I decided to try painting purple. i got out a blue based purple and a red based purple. I have to say i'm not a fan of the red based purple it's too much like pink after adding the highlights. Also with the blue purple i think i went a bit harsh with shading and highlighting but after a second look with the pictures it seems to be ok...
He has been removed from the cork base and onto a normal base I still need to figure out what i want to do with his base. I've been trying to get past a basing 'block' 'hate' or what ever you want to call it. I find basing a chore and put it off as long as i can. I'm hoping to find some sort of zen or love of basing but i'm not sure how that will happen.

  1. He looks brilliant. sheesh another painter that can be neat and take thier time, how I envy you your clean sharp lines and smooth blends.

As to basing, My objective with basing is to put in the minimum effort and have a result which makes me hapy, to that end I use cheap railway ballast of two sizes mixed together. I slap on pva where i want the gravel, dunk the base, clean the edge with my thumb and let it dry.

once thats done i paint a base colour, wash black then drybrush with the base again, then the base + white or grey to highlight.

once I varnish the mini I then add a small clump of static grass or two, just a tuft held on with either pve or superglue.

nothing too fancy, dosent take long, but really makes me feel "finished"

  2. I think the model looks awesome. I hate to do bases as well. In the future I think I am going to buy the resin premade bases and then I can just enjoy painting the bases as well as the models, but that is just me.

  4. Talk about smooth blending, he's fantastic. Especially the blending on the plasma pistol.

I had a basing block for a long time too. My Blood Pact are the first time I've broken through it, actually. I use pumice paste and cork pieces for mud and rocks respectively. Painting the base is another step, but it's a simple one and I'm much more satisfied with the models this way. With my old models, you could tell I put in hours painting the fig and about 30 seconds to glue the base and dump him in static grass or sand.

  5. I really like the hues of this mini. Too many people go with the typical blacks and reds of the Inquisition, something I'm guily of myself. Can I ask the specifics of the manufacturer and colors you used?

As for basing, it can be as easy or complicated as you want it to be, and I find it to be rather enjoyable since it's the last thing I do before I seal the mini and consider it complete.

  7. Jonathan, I used Vallejo paints the model color line
royal purple with a highlight of blue violet

and violet red with a highlight of mixing the violet red with white

Both of which i put a black wash over for the shading actually a few layers of it in some spots.

Let me know if you have any other questions on the colors :)
